5 Ways Pool Owners Can Save on Water Bills

Last week we looked at some proven ways to save money on energy costs associated with owning a pool. This week we are looking at 5 ways pool owners can save on water bills. If you are a pool owner, you are probably aware that pools lose water, even without a leak.

5 Ways Pool Owners Can Save on Water Bills

Evaporation –  Cover it! Without a cover, an average 18′ X 36′ pool loses about an inch a week to evaporation. in a pool that same size, that translates into 7,000 gallons annually. Additionally, in warmer climates like Arizona, Texas and Florida, evaporation can easily increase to over 25,000 gallons a year.

Leakage –  Nationally, about 30% of pools have leaks. Check yours soon. Use a grease pencil and mark the water line. Check back in 24 hours.

Don’t Overfill – If you are filling your pool manually, don’t walk away while topping it off.  If it’s overfilled, water splashes out much more often, even more with boisterous play. If you use an automatic refilling device, have your pool checked for leaks periodically.

Fountains and Waterfalls – Use timers to automatically shut of fountains and waterfalls as this type of aeration adds to water evaporation.

Turn Down the Heater – As noted before, the warmer a pool is, the more evaporation. Use the heater judiciously, especially in the summer months. Also, shrubs and fences help cut down on wind which also increases evaporation, and you’ll have added privacy as well!
