5 Energy Efficient Pool Tips

Everyone enjoys the benefits of a backyard pool, but did you know there are many ways to have an energy efficient pool, too? Here are 5 energy efficient pool tips from CCA that will save you money each and every month.

5 Energy Efficient Pool Tips

5 energy efficient pool tipsENERGY STAR Variable-Speed Pool Pump — There are more than 5 million in-ground pools installed across America. The most energy usage component of each pool is the pool pump, which re-circulates water through the filter to maintain water clarity and hygiene. Many pool owners don’t realize how much energy it takes to run a pump, so folks don’s spend much time deciding which pump is right for their pool. Most pool owners may not realize that pool pump speeds should vary, based on how the pool is being used. The use of a variable-speed pool pump gives you the option to run your pump at very low speeds during filtration and to operate your pools water features, cleaning equipment or heating at the specific speeds needed in order to create an energy efficiency solution. An ENERGY STAR certified variable-speed pool pump from CCA, such as the EcoStar SVRS, could do just that and much more.

With Crystal Clear Aquatics selection of variable-speed pumps, money flows back into your pocket. We carry the broadest line-up of ENERGY STAR rated variable-speed pumps in the Wellington area. Our variable-speed pumps can even save you up to 90% on your pool energy costs. These pumps use less energy by allowing you to program specific operating speeds, automatically running at slower or faster speeds depending on your pool’s needs. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, ENERGY STAR certified pool pumps save consumers thousands of dollars over their lifetime. They can often pay for themselves in as little as a single season as well as run more quietly and most importantly, prolong the life of a pool’s filtering system. When it comes to saving money on your electric bill, a variable-speed pool pump is the ultimate way to save energy.

Robotic Pool Cleaners – Although there are many different types of pool cleaners in the market today, robotic pool cleaners are known as the most energy efficient pool cleaning technology.  Robotic pool cleaners typically use less than 20% of the energy required by a pump to power a typical cleaner. By utilizing a robotic cleaner, such as the AquaVac 500, and reprogramming the pool equipment to filter pool water more efficiently, you may be able to save more energy and money.

The AquaVac 500 Robotic Pool Cleaner comes equipped with a microprocessor-based program that determines the most efficient cleaning path possible where pool owners can simply select the cleaning frequency that best matches their pool debris load. Working independently of the pool filtration system, this robotic pool cleaner technology is the most energy efficient solution, using up to 94% less energy than most pressure pool cleaners.

Pool Covers – According to the U.S. Department of Energy, using a pool cover is one of the best energy efficiency solutions for your pool. One of the leading causes of losing water and energy in your pool is through evaporation. The hotter the temperature in your climate, like here in Florida, the more water will evaporate.  If you invest in a pool cover before the season starts, you can significantly lower the rate at which your water, and chemicals, evaporates. Pool covers help keep the water in so you can add water to your pool less often. Along with loss of water from evaporation, comes an imbalance of water chemicals in your pool. Pool covers pool help keep the water chemistry in balance by keeping the water in your pool and the contaminants out.

More importantly, especially here in Florida, pool covers also help keep the heat in your water from escaping during cool days and even cooler nights. With your pool being maintained at a more constant temperature, you can run your pool heater less often, which will cut down on the energy costs of maintaining your pool.

PrintPreventative Maintenance – There are many ways you can efficiently maintain your pool; one of which is regular maintenance of water levels, debris, and pool chemicals. Make sure to lower the heater temperature when the pool is not in use and maintain appropriate water temperatures when in use. When it comes to backwashing the pool filter, only backwash as much as needed in order to avoid wasting any additional water and energy. Be sure to keep drain systems clear in order to allow the free flow of water through the filter.

Rebates – Beyond these four ways to save on your electric bill, a fair number of utility companies are offering rebate incentives to pool owners to encourage the use of energy efficient pool pumps since they are the big drain on household energy, behind only heating and cooling your house. CCA offers innovative new products with incredible rebate savings too. Get cash back by purchasing your next pool product from Crystal Clear Aquatics and registering for any of the many different rebates that may be available.

Using these 5 energy efficient pool tips, you can turn your poolside escape, into an energy efficient getaway.

Variable Speed Pool Pumps in Florida Save Money

There are an estimated 5 million in-ground residential pools in the U.S. (Beyond that, more than 150,000 new pools are built annually in the U.S. alone.) According to a report by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), pools in the US generate as much as $1.6 billion in energy costs per year.

Pools, as a rule, can be expensive to operate. Luckily, pool owners can look to pool equipment manufacturers to help them reduce their costs and lower their electric bill. Pool pumps represent one of the most significant users of energy in a pool owners’ home. In fact, they are the often the second biggest contributor to energy costs, lagging only behind their heating and cooling costs for the entire home.

Single speed pool pumps, which tend to waste more energy because they are always (and unnecessarily) running at top speed, have traditionally been the big energy users. With the advent of variable speed pumps (VSPs), however, the movement is shifting rapidly.

Variable Speed Pool Pumps in Florida Save Money

Variable Speed Pool Pumps Save Florida Pool Owners MoneyPool equipment manufacturers are striving to design and manufacture hard-working, efficient products that will allow pools owners to run their pools more efficiently. That means environmentally-compliant equipment, with proven performance, built to last, that also dramatically lower operating costs. Along these lines, it is generally agreed that the greatest potential for pool owners to save on operating costs is to switch their single-speed pumps to a minimum of a two-speed or, better yet, a variable-speed pump.

For the pool owner, it’s always preferable to want to do something vs. having to do it, but money can be a great motivator. The fact is that VSPs can save up to 90% on energy costs compared to a single speed pump. They are able to match a pool’s needs versus a single speed pump running at full power 100% of the time.

As further validation, the EPA asserts that “ENERGY STAR” certified pool pumps will usually:

  • Save the pool owner more than $1,000 over the pump’s lifetime.
  • Pay for themselves in less than two years.
  • Run quieter and prolong the life of your pool’s filtering system.

Here in Florida, it’s important to note that the EPA notes that “in warmer climates, where pools are used year-round, savings can be significantly higher”.

In addition to tremendous energy savings, running pumps at lower intervals have multiple benefits, including:

  • Better filtration
  • Incredibly quiet operation
  • Less stress lengthens equipment life
  • Longer filter cycles keep chemicals in circulation longer

Florida Pool Heating Season – Crystal Clear Aquatics

As the temperatures begin to cool down, the Florida pool heating season begins and pool heaters are starting to be used again.  Many of our clients have not used their pool heaters here in Palm Beach County for several months, so there are a few things to keep in mind when starting up your pool heater again this season.

Florida Pool Heating Season – Crystal Clear Aquatics

  • If you plan on firing up the pool heater, give us a call and we can schedule a visit to make sure that everything is in working order.
  • Check that your pool heater breakers are set to “on”. If you have a gas heater, check with your gas provider to make sure that you have plenty of gas for the season.
  • Keep in mind that electric heaters and heat pumps take longer to heat up than gas heaters.  If you have an electric heat pump you should expect to see a 1-2 degree increase in temperature per hour.
  • Remember, your pool heater will not run if your pool pump is off.
  • If you are looking to maintain your pool’s heated temperature overnight, you must keep your pool pump running 24 hours/day.  If the pump is turned off in the evening, you will lose the heat overnight and you will find a very chilly pool in the morning!
  • If you are considering buying a pool heater or perhaps looking to upgrade or replace an existing heater, we can help you decide which type of heating configuration (gas or electric) will best suit your needs and usage patterns.

Our repair department fixes or replaces all brands of pool equipment. We offer new energy efficient motors that meet the new Florida Energy Efficiency Code, as well as a host of products designed to reduce your energy bill and provide you with excellent pool and spa filtering. One call does it all.

We fix pool motors, pool lights, pool timers, pool heaters, pool filters, pool pumps, pool valves, pool plumbing, pool tile, pool skimmers, pool leaks, pool automation, in-floor pool cleaners, automatic pool cleaners, pool handrails and and main drains including VGB compliant covers.

And most importantly, keep your water ‘Crystal Clear’.

Softer water with salt chlorination in palm beach county

How Chlorine Affects Hair Color (and how to protect it)

Many folks of all ages color their hair. In fact, many of us spend a great deal of money getting our hair perfect and we want it to last as long as possible, so when we get into a pool we all really want to know how does pool water affect hair, or more specifically, how chlorine affects hair color.

How Chlorine Affects Hair

Pools use chlorine to keep the pool safe to swim in. Chlorine is also a bleaching agent. It makes our whites shirts even whiter in the wash. As such, it is going to make any hair color lighter, even quicker if your chlorine soaked hair is dried by the heat of the mid-day sun. It can ruin your expensive dye job, and quickly at that. Worse, not only does it lighten your hair but it will damage and dull your hair as well.

Remember as kids spending all summer at your pool, or a neighbor’s pool? Remember how much more conditioner you used in the summer to try to keep your hair looking healthy and beautiful? Pool water is not kind to hair, period. And colored hair is at risk when spending the day poolside. Remember, pool water is much more chlorinated than the water coming though the tap in our kitchens and bathrooms, including the shower.

What Can You do to Protect Hair?

The first, most obvious answer is that you can wear a swimming cap. Although you might consider in unattractive, it is the best solution.

Wet your hair first in the shower before entering the pool.  Now your hair has absorbed water, so you will absorb less chlorinated water in the pool.

Conditioner your hair before going in the pool. Take a shower, wet down your hair and work in a bit of conditioner to coat your hair. It will coat the shaft and keep your hair as chlorine free as possible.

Most importantly, use a shampoo and conditioner immediately after swimming to remove chlorine from your hair. Don’t let the sun beat down on a headful of chlorine. Hit the shower! Nothing says you can’t jump back in and have more fun later! (then shower it out again!).

Crystal Clear Aquatics Pool Service

The CCA Reputation – Quality Service Equals Customer Satisfaction

Let’s get this out of the way – Crystal Clear Aquatics will be the last pool service company you hire. We are that good and proud of it.

The “elephant in the room” is that pool service is increasing lumped together with less desirable professions. And that brings us to the ugly truth about pool service. This general attitude of “not trusting service people” is rampant throughout the “blue-collar” service industries. In fact, if you were to ask your local BBB, they’ll tell you that Movers, Roofers and Construction companies in particular are constantly vying for the top spot on the BBB’s list of “worst offenders” and “most complaints.”

Increasingly, pool service companies are getting a bad reputation from “pool shark” companies.

Preparing a Florida Pool for Winter

For most of Florida, pool season ends generally in October. If your pool is not heated, here are some tips for preparing a Florida pool for winter with shorter days and cooler nights resulting in significantly lower pool temperatures, especially for uncovered pools that lose lots of heat to the nighttime sky.

In northern states, it is fairly common to totally drain a swimming pool during the winter months. While we may not have to “winterize” our pools in Florida, we still need to take some important steps to keep our pools happy and healthy year-round. Here are some tips for preparing a Florida pool for winter, if your pool is not heated for “year ’round use”.

Continue Cleaning

Keep your filter clean and vacuum as usual. Even though you are probably using your swimming pool less frequently during the winter months, it is still important to maintain a regular cleaning routine. Empty the debris traps every few days to prevent leaves and debris from building up and clogging your pool’s filtration system.

Monitor Water Level

As rainfall decreases and chilly nights become more common, the water in your pool will begin to evaporate. Don’t be surprised if your water level drops an inch or two in a week. To prevent your pool’s water level from getting too low, monitor it and add water as needed.

Prevent Algae Build-Up

Keep testing the water and keep it circulating! Even in winter, many areas of Florida are prone to algae bloom, due to fluctuating temperatures and weather conditions. To prevent algae build-up, test your swimming pool’s water chemistry and balance as needed. run the pump for at least 6 hours a day.

Invest in a Pool Heater!

A pool is a big investment. For maximum enjoyment even when it’s chilly out, make the most out of your swimming pool by investing in a pool heater and you can enjoy your well-maintained pool throughout the winter.
