Last week, we looked at some of the financial benefits of solar pool heaters over gas and heat pumps.
More on Solar Heating a Florida Pool
Here’s the simplest way to think about solar heating a Florida pool. Solar can heat your pool about 15º warmer than without any gas or electric heater year round. This should yield at least 9 months of comfortable swimming, and possibly some winter swimming when the weather is warm. All of this comes with absolutely zero operating costs. A heat pump can heat your pool to any temperature you desire, any day of the year, no matter what the weather conditions are. There is a steeper operating expense, but it might be worth it to you.
But here is something to think about. Not all of us have screened in pools. Here in Florida, an exposed pool, can be anywhere from 5-9º warmer than a screened pool, which means in the heat of the summer, it can actually be too warm. For a couple months, it’s not a refreshing dip in the pool as pool temperature can easily crawl far above 90 . But it CAN be refreshing with a solar heater.
A solar pool heater can give you about 9 months of comfortable swimming. Sure, some folks will tell you twelve months, but December, January and February are iffy. If there are warm, sunny spells in these months, the pool will come up to temperature. But in those summer months when the pool is too warm for swimming, the solar heater can actually be run at night in reverse and cool your pool back down to a comfortable temperature. For Free!
Now for those of you that are snowbirds and come down here in only in winter, or you don’t have a good roof exposure for solar, or you need therapeutic swimming year round, then a heat pump is probably your best option.
