To kill green algae, you need to use chlorine “pool shock”. Shocking uses granular form of highly concentrated chlorine, which quickly raises the chlorine level of the swimming pool water, killing off all of the algae. Be sure to brush the walls and floor of your swimming pool, loosening the algae in order to expose more of it to the shock chemicals, and aim for a pH of about 7.5.

CDC Warns of Pool Parasite

A hardy parasite has led federal health officials to warn pool goers to be careful in the water this summer.

Outbreaks related to pools, hot tubs and other recreational uses of water can be dangerous, and according to government report, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 90 outbreaks between 2011 to 2012 resulted in 1,788 illnesses, 95 hospitalizations and one death.

A major cause of the outbreaks in treated water, including hot tubs and pools, is a parasite called Cryptosporidium, which causes acute gastrointestinal issues.

Michele Hlavsa, chief of the CDC’s Healthy Swimming Program, said the parasite is particularity troubling. “With these outbreaks, we see they disproportionately affect young children, and they’re the ones like to go to a pool.”

The parasite can be cleared from the body in about two to three weeks, Hlavasa said, but in a person with a weakened immune system the condition may become chronic or even fatal.

Because of gastrointestinal issues such as diarrhea, “you’re losing so much and your body isn’t able to absorb nutrients,” Hlavasa said.

To stay safe, pool owners need to insure that their pool water is properly treated.

“If you’re worried about the restaurant’s water, it’s the same thing with pools… you’re putting your body in that water,” Hlavasa said.

Heavy rain and wind can cause big problems for pool owners. Rain and wind, can introduce an array of dirt, debris, and other unhealthy pollutants into your pool water as well as put a strain on your pool’s filter, pump, and even structure. Keep the Pool Full – Never ever drain the pool before a rain storm. The weight of the water helps hold the pool in place in case the ground around it becomes heavily saturated with rainwater. That could cause the pool to lift out of the ground. If you’re afraid the pool might overflow, lower the water level no more than just a few inches. Remember to close the skimmer valve to prevent damage to the pump.

Turn it Off – Turn off the power to the pool. Switch off the breakers for the pump motor, heater, lighting, etc.

Clear the Deck – High winds can blow items such as floats, chairs, tables and other patio furniture into the pool which can then cause some major pool damage. Place pool floats, toys, and other items in a safe place, such as a garage, shed, or storage bin. If it can’t be moved, cover it and tie it down if possible.

Pretreat the Water – Rainwater carries organic contaminants from the atmosphere. Groundwater runoff into the pool is even worse.
